Clarinet, Horn, Basson
Commissioning Project

Trio Banner.png

Three Reeds and a Horn is a clarinet, horn, and bassoon trio that performs traditional classical music, contemporary classical music, world music, and jazz/funk. Most of the trio’s music is by living composers which allows for musical  interpretation informed by talking with the composer directly. Three Reeds and a Horn programs music with a message, addressing themes of nature conservation, LGBT+ pride, Latin American culture, and accessibility. Programs also include music that is just plain FUN, music that can get toes tapping and hands clapping.

The inspiration for this program was simply the fact that three really good friends wanted to make music together, but almost no repertoire existed for the combination of clarinet, bassoon, and horn. So the trio set forth on a journey to commission new works. This program includes five commissions that were initiated to grow this body of repertoire and create unique performance opportunities for other students and teachers.

Though an unusual instrument combination, clarinet, horn, and bassoon make a beautiful trio. With each instrument having a very warm, welcoming, and sonorous mid-range, the ability to meld into another voice and yet emerge into distinct textures is remarkable. Join us in this exploration of works for clarinet, horn, and bassoon. The program is approximately 60 minutes without intermission.
